Tight budget? Want to meet people? Just happy to help and get involved? Love to be loved?
Volunteering may be the just the thing for you. Email email@example.com!
We need helpers to:
- meet and greet people and manage tickets at the door
- lend a hand setting up for socials
- help out packing up socials
-occasionally grab the teachers a coffee
- help move stuff in their car
You don't need experience, but you do need an hour to spend (most shifts are 45 mins - 1 hour).
You’ll not only get our everlasting gratitude, you’ll also get a heavy discount on the event you work!
How will the workshops work?
At Shake That Thing...Faster you will be able to choose your own adventure! We'll be running TWO ROOMS of workshops at the same time, allowing you to do a whole weekend getting immersed in one dance style, or sample all the styles across the weekend.
Nervous about going fast? This weekend is about learning how to dance to fastER music comfortably, not about throwing you in the deep end and dancing fast all weekend! You'll learn technique valuable to dancing better at all speeds so you can expand you tempo range and enjoy even more music! All worshops are aimed at intermediate dancers, so if you know the basics of Bal, Shag or Lindy you'll get a lot out of this weekend.
We've designed a super flexible program, so you'll have options all weekend as to what style you focus on, whether or not you do aerials or a particular style.
Any quesions let us know!
Workshops will run from 10am-4.30pm on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th July.
You will need to arrive a little early to Check In for workshops.
Saturday - Please arrive by 9.45am to check in, warm up, stretch, meet everyone. Morning tea will be provided at the workshops. There will be an hour-long break for lunch. We suggest either bringing your lunch with you, or heading to the local shops. Don't forget about the Saturday Night Swing Social to bust out your new skills!
Sunday - Just like Saturday, please arrive by 9.45am to check in, warm up, stretch, meet everyone. Same deal as Saturday for lunch.
We usually find we're exhausted but totally pumped after a weekend like this, and not quite ready to head straight home, so there will be a wind down social dance later on to finish! Bring change of shirt and extra energy ;-)
A NOTE ON PARTNERING
For Shag, Balboa and Lindy classes partners will be rotated throughout the class. Please see your teachers if you have any concerns.
As safety is our main concern, we will not be rotating partners for aerials. Please come with a partner you are comfortable working with, or if you are willing, we can match you up on the day. We anticipate working small groups. Each partnership will require a flyer and a base. These do not have to be habitual leads/follows.
A WORD ON HYGIENE:
- Please be mindful that you will be dancing many hours with many different people.
- Maintain a high standard of personal hygiene; remember to wash your hands regularly and make use of the hand sanitizer provided. Bring spare clothes/shirts and shower each morning - you will be sweating. The dances we are doing this weekend often involve close contact with other people and we will act on any comments about 'smelly' people.
- If you are sick, contact us for a partial refund, don't come spreading those germs!
A WORD ON ETIQUETTE
- Please be kind and considerate of your fellow dancers at all times. Anything less will not be tolerated.
- Everyone else has come to learn from the teachers, so even if you are 'experienced', please refrain from offering advice or 'alternative' views to other dancers unless invited specifically to do so.

John and Julia Wharington are passionate about Balboa, and they love sharing their love for the dance with dancers at any level. For the last decade, they have taught numerous Balboa workshops, troupes and classes in Australia and overseas. From their classes you can expect to receive a solid grounding in the foundations of Balboa all the way to challenges that get you thinking out of the box, all bundled in a fun and unique package. Their aim is to get you up and dancing on the social dance floor, dancing Balboa comfortably and looking good in no time.
John and Julia have won many Australian Balboa Championships, and also have won or placed in various Balboa competitions in the USA. They are experts in their field, who focus on creative teaching techniques and bringing an infectious enthusiasm to their classes. Together they run Australia’s only Balboa and Shag festival, ‘All the Cats Join In’ in Melbourne.
Annabelle and Nial
fell in love with Shag after they took their first lessons 7 years ago and ever since they’ve been working hard to build the Shag scene in Australia. They teach regularly in Melbourne, and have also taught across Australia and internationally. On top of this, they’ve both frequently placed at competitions around the world, most recently taking out first at the Hot Rhythm Holiday invitational. They are passionate about Shag and place an emphasis on dancing Shag socially, and building the Shag community.
When Pip and Dean
walked into their first Lindy Hop lesson, it was love at first sight. Not with each other (though that came later!), but with the dance, the community, the music and the culture that is swing dance. 15 years later that love has blossomed into a life-long passion for building the community and inspiring the love of all things swing in others. With a room full of accolades from competitions spanning over a decade, 5 countries and multiple styles (most recently competing in Savoy Cup and culminating in winning Australia's own Helzapoppin Prize in 2016), Pip and Dean combine their boundless enthusiasm with a focus on the connection, comfort, creativity and pure fun of the dance. With Pip and Dean you can expect to experience the technical aspects of the dance in a relaxed and fun context, with plenty if insight, laughs and a touch of flash n trash.
Some of you are old hands, but for some of you these will be your first workshops! Woohoo - we're sure you'll have a great time! Here are a couple of tips to help you make the most of your weekend:
1. Know where you need to be and when. Use the schedule above to know where and when everything happens. Save yourself any stress later and check it out now!
2. Wear comfy shoes and clothes - you will be dancing all day! Don't worry about looking good, save that for the Saturday night social dance! Please bring a number of spare shirts, it’s a cool time of year, but we'll be dancing A LOT, so please change if you feel damp. Even if you think you won’t sweat much PLEASE bring some spare tshirts! Layer up against the cold.
3. Stay fresh. Please wear and re-apply deodorant and make use of breath mints provided. For your own comfort and others ;-)
4. Stay hydrated - luckily it's not going to be hot, but dancing all day is sure to work up a sweat! Consider getting some Hydralite or Berocca to keep you going, and definitely bring a drink bottle.
5. Bring a note-book. Serious about learning? Write down key phrases or handy hints that you hear over the weekend so that you can remember them later.
6. Be positive and have fun! It's easy to get bogged down about your dancing when you're inundated with lots of new info - just remember that this is part of the learning process and everyone's feeling the same way. With such great teachers, you're sure to have a ball!
